Stubaier Alps: German man rescued from crevasse

A 69-year-old German man was rescued after falling into a crevasse in the Stubaier Alps on Monday afternoon. The incident occurred on the Sulzenauferner glacier while the man was descending from the 3,498-meter Pfaffenschneide.

During the fall, which lasted approximately eight meters, a rock slab weighing between 250 and 300 kilograms slid into the crevasse and trapped the man's left lower leg. Rescue teams utilized a pulley system and hydraulic equipment to lift the rock and free him. The victim sustained head abrasions and injuries to his lower leg and was transported to Hall hospital via emergency medical helicopter.

The rescue operation involved 17 members of the Neustift mountain rescue, 20 members of the Neustift volunteer fire department, an alpine policeman, and emergency and police helicopters.
