StubHub Canada fined $20,000 by Ontario over ticket price caps

The Ontario government has fined ticket reseller StubHub Canada Ltd. $20,000 for violations of provincial legislation that caps ticket resale at face value. According to the province’s Consumer Beware List, the penalties consist of two $10,000 fines issued on September 9. One fine was issued for allegedly offering a ticket for sale above its original face value, while the second was for facilitating a transaction without providing proof of the original price.

This legislation was implemented earlier this year to combat soaring resale prices and scalping for major events, such as the World Cup in Toronto and high-demand concert tours. StubHub has been under provincial scrutiny since the spring, when 27 resale websites were notified of upcoming inspections for non-compliance.

This enforcement follows a similar action against SeatGeek Canada, which was fined $25,000 in August. Under current Ontario law, sellers found in violation can face fines of up to $250,000 and public identification on the Consumer Beware List.
