Benjamin Franklin High School student dies after fourth-story fall

A student died Wednesday after falling from a fourth-story building at Benjamin Franklin High School in the Highland Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. The incident, which occurred around 1 p.m., prompted an immediate lockdown of the campus.

Video footage circulating online appears to show a classroom altercation involving two students. In the footage, one student is seen punching another before fleeing the room, after which the victim is seen falling or jumping from a fourth-floor railing. While the Los Angeles Police Department initially stated there was no immediate evidence of foul play, the investigation into the circumstances of the death is ongoing.

Following the incident, the Los Angeles Unified School District deployed mental health professionals to the campus to provide counseling and support to students and staff. A vigil was held by community members and family to honor the student, who was identified in social media posts by the name Xavier.
