Student dies in Ibadan following detention over ₦8,000 debt dispute

Al-Amin Mohammed, a 30-year-old polytechnic student and aluminium fixer, has died in Ibadan, Oyo State, days after being released from police custody. His death follows a dispute over an alleged outstanding debt of ₦8,000.

According to his family, the dispute began when Mohammed borrowed ₦23,000 from a Point-of-Sale operator named Kazeem, later repaying ₦15,000. The family alleges that the disagreement escalated into a legal matter that led to Mohammed being detained and remanded at the Agodi Custodial Centre.

Mohammed’s mother, Simiat Mohammed, stated that her son became withdrawn and expressed deep humiliation regarding his detention and the perceived damage to his reputation. On September 17, three days after his release, Mohammed ingested a poisonous substance. His family reported that he left a voice note expressing extreme frustration before the incident. After being turned away by three different medical facilities, he was eventually taken to University College Hospital, Ibadan, where he was pronounced dead.
