Student governments review sexual violence response plans
Student government bodies at Cornell University and Memorial University of Newfoundland Students' Union (MUNSU) are taking action regarding sexual violence response following recent high-profile allegations.
At Cornell, the Undergraduate Student Government senate unanimously passed a resolution supporting a student known as Jane Doe, who is suing several entities following an alleged gang rape at a fraternity house in 2024. The resolution urges the university to avoid retaliating against students who report sexual violence and calls for enhanced security measures regarding the Interfraternity Council.
In Canada, MUNSU’s board of directors voted to review its sexual violence response plan, citing the situation at Cornell as a catalyst for renewed discussions. The review will involve internal policy assessments, external campaign evaluations, and mandatory sexual violence training for all staff. Executive directors have been assigned specific roles to investigate support avenues, promote survivor resources, and report on the frequency and outcomes of harassment matters to the board.
