Student housing construction projects launched in Turku and Helsinki
Student housing foundations in Finland have launched significant new construction projects in Turku and Helsinki to address rising demand for affordable student accommodation.
In Turku, the Turun Ylioppilaskyläsäätiö (TYS) has begun the first phase of the Kylänkulma project. This phase involves constructing three apartment buildings on Halistentie in Eastern Ylioppilaskylä, providing 207 new units, primarily studios and two-room apartments. The project, led by main contractor Pohjola Rakennus Oy Suomi, has an estimated cost of approximately 22 million euros and is scheduled for completion in early 2028.
In the Helsinki region, the foundation Hoas is investing nearly 60 million euros into two new projects located in Ruskeasuo and Itäkeskus. These developments will add 402 affordable apartments to the market, also expected to be completed by early 2028. Hoas noted that a legislative change allowing student housing projects to be fully financed through interest subsidy loans has enabled these developments to proceed despite previous budget constraints.
