Student housing costs rise in Czech Republic and Croatia

Students in the Czech Republic and Croatia are facing rising costs for accommodation as the new academic year approaches.

In the Czech Republic, private rental prices for students have increased by up to 14 percent in some areas. Brno has seen the sharpest rise in small apartment rents at 12 percent, while Prague recorded a 4 percent increase. In contrast, Olomouc saw a slight decrease of approximately 2 percent. Students opting for private rooms in shared apartments in Prague face costs ranging from approximately CZK 5,700 to CZK 11,500, with additional utility charges expected to add another CZK 1,000 to CZK 2,000 monthly.

In Croatia, student dormitory prices are increasing in several cities due to rising utility and maintenance costs. In Zagreb, some dormitory rates have risen by an average of 16 percent, with certain double rooms increasing from 77 to 90 euros. Student representatives have expressed concern that these price hikes are occurring while student stipends have remained stagnant since 2023. However, cities such as Osijek and Zadar are not implementing price increases, maintaining rates between 60 and 130 euros depending on the room type.
