Student housing shortage hits North Rhine-Westphalia
Thousands of students in North Rhine-Westphalia are facing a severe housing shortage ahead of the winter semester beginning October 1. In Bonn alone, approximately 4,000 applicants are on waiting lists for only 800 available dormitory spots, according to Robert Anders, spokesperson for Studierendenwerk Bonn.
The housing crisis extends to other major university cities in the region, including Münster, Aachen, Cologne, and Düsseldorf. Beyond official dormitories, students are also reporting difficulties finding shared apartments (WGs).
Robert Anders expressed concerns regarding the future of public funding for dormitory investments and suggested that building regulations for student housing should be reviewed. He noted that long commutes from areas like the Ruhrgebiet to Bonn cause significant time loss for students. He emphasized that while students aged 20 to 25 are a financially vulnerable demographic, they represent a vital resource for the future labor market.
