Thessaloniki student injured by falling ceiling plaster at school
A 14-year-old student was injured at Basilika Junior High School in Thessaloniki when a large piece of plaster, approximately 3 to 4 centimeters thick, detached from the ceiling and struck him in the head. The student was transported by ambulance to Gennimatas Hospital with a head injury and bleeding; however, medical reports indicate his clinical condition is stable and not life-threatening.
The incident occurred during a class in the arts room. Following the event, the Association of Parents and Guardians of Thermi Municipality issued a statement condemning the incident and demanding that the Municipality of Thermi take immediate responsibility. The association is calling for the school to remain closed until the municipality provides written certification that the building is safe and suitable for use.
Local officials, including Deputy Mayor of Technical Services Apostolos Tsolakis, conducted an inspection of the site. Preliminary findings indicated no obvious cause for the collapse, such as visible cracks or signs of moisture in the affected area or surrounding rooms. Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident, and experts may be called to perform a secondary pre-seismic inspection of the structure.
