Student living costs in France reach record highs for 2026

The cost of the 2026 academic year in France has reached record levels, according to an annual barometer from the student union FAGE. For a non-scholarship undergraduate student, the total cost of starting the year and maintaining daily life now exceeds 3,200 euros, representing a more than 25% increase over the last six years.

Housing remains the most significant financial burden, with average monthly costs rising to 637 euros, up from 581 euros in 2025. Other major monthly expenses include transportation at 152 euros and food at 181 euros (excluding university catering). FAGE president Suzanne Nijdam noted that the budget pressure has expanded from one-time enrollment fees to the entirety of daily student life, impacting mental health.

Specific start-of-year costs are estimated at 2,095 euros, which include real estate agency fees, security deposits, and pedagogical materials. FAGE has criticized certain mandatory equipment costs, such as those in dentistry, calling them ‘illegal fees’ and demanding state support. The organization is also calling for increased public university housing, stricter rent controls, and the maintenance of current Crous residence rates to combat growing student precariousness, particularly among non-EU students.
