Student loan borrowers face debt relief shifts and repayment uncertainty
In the United States, President Biden continues efforts to cancel student debt, having already addressed millions of loans through various initiatives. However, borrowers enrolled in the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan are facing uncertainty as the program is phased out. Many are receiving notices regarding new deadlines to select alternative repayment plans; failure to act could result in an automatic transfer to standard repayment plans with significantly higher monthly costs.
In Australia, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese faces increasing pressure to address the rising costs of the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP). Unlike the US system, Australian loans are income-contingent, but recent inflation-linked adjustments have caused debt amounts to jump significantly for many borrowers. While major debt forgiveness similar to US policies is not expected, changes regarding the loan system are anticipated in the upcoming May budget.
