Germany prepares for nationwide Gen Z protests on October 31

A youth initiative known as ‘Gen Z steht auf’ (or ‘Gen Z regelt’) has called for nationwide demonstrations across 21 German cities on October 31. The protests aim to address concerns regarding education funding, rising living costs, social security, and opposition to compulsory military service.

Security authorities, including the German Police Union (GdP) and regional interior ministers, have expressed concern that radical left-wing groups or extremists could exploit the demonstrations. This follows recent large-scale unrest in France and Italy, where student-led protests escalated into widespread looting and violence. German police are preparing substantial security operations in major cities such as Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne, and Frankfurt to prevent similar disorder, particularly as the date coincides with Halloween.

While organizers emphasize that the movement intends to remain peaceful and has distanced itself from violence, authorities are monitoring social media for mobilization efforts that use imagery of unrest to incite chaos.
