France student protests escalate into nationwide unrest

Student protests in France over education conditions, including teacher shortages and poor infrastructure, have escalated into widespread unrest. The demonstrations, which began in the Île-de-France region, have spread across the country and expanded to include university campuses, with the Union Étudiante reporting blockades at approximately 30 campuses.

Authorities have reported significant casualties and legal actions. The Ministry of Interior stated that 1,949 people were detained, with 1,800 resulting in arrests. Additionally, 305 police officers and gendarmes were injured. Education Minister Edouard Geffray reported that 170 students and 65 staff members have been injured during the unrest.

In response to the violence and disruptions, approximately 400 schools were ordered to close and transition to remote learning. Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu convened an emergency cabinet meeting to address the escalating crisis. While some demonstrations remained peaceful, many incidents involved arson, property damage, and clashes with law enforcement.
