Students moving to colder climates may also face additional expenses for winter gear. Fixed annual costs, including rent, internet, and cellphone bills, can range from $10,000 to $20,000.

Variable costs include groceries, personal spending, and commuting. Commuting expenses can vary significantly depending on whether a student uses public transit, ride-sharing, or maintains a personal vehicle, which involves costs for gas, maintenance, and insurance.
