Student survey reveals coping rituals for back-to-school stress

A back-to-school survey conducted by the gum brand EXTRA reveals how students manage the mental stress of returning to the classroom. According to the study, 52% of students experience a sense of “overthinking” or racing thoughts during the transition between summer and autumn breaks.

Key stressors identified include new schedules (45%), new teachers (37%), academic preparedness (33%), clothing choices (21%), and friendships (17%). To cope with these pressures, many students turn to small rituals to reset. Music is cited by 47% of respondents as a primary way to manage their mood and focus. Additionally, approximately one in three students considers chewing gum a staple part of their school essentials to help them feel ready for the day.
