Students and young adults face rising internet fraud risks
Young adults and students are increasingly targeted by sophisticated internet scams as they navigate digital platforms for essential tasks such as shopping, banking, and job hunting. Despite being digital natives, this demographic faces significant financial risks; according to the FBI’s Internet Crime Report, Americans aged 20–29 reported over $500 million in internet-crime losses in 2025.
Common fraudulent activities include online shopping and marketplace scams, where scammers use fake deals or fraudulent websites to target those purchasing textbooks, dorm supplies, or apartment essentials. Additionally, job scams are prevalent, with criminals offering fake internships or part-time positions featuring high salaries and flexible schedules to lure students. Experts advise using trusted retailers, verifying website URLs, and being cautious of unsolicited communications to avoid falling victim to these schemes.
