Students at UTCJ report threats over campus food sales
Students at the Universidad Tecnológica de Ciudad Juárez (UTCJ) have reported being ordered to stop selling food and other products on campus, with some alleging they were threatened with expulsion. Luis Fermín Cortés García, a student who sells sushi to fund his education, stated that he was confronted by staff and security and told he would be dropped from his studies if he continued.
University officials, including Finance Director Jorge Ramos Negrete, confirmed that there are restrictions on commercial activities within the campus due to existing cafeteria concessions and a lack of permits or training for student vendors. However, the administration denied that these activities are grounds for expulsion and stated that security is only tasked with informing students of the rules.
Carlos Ernesto Ortiz Villegas, the former rector of UTCJ and current representative of the governor, expressed support for the students' right to generate income for their studies. He suggested that the conflict should be resolved through dialogue between the student body and university authorities while respecting institutional regulations.
