Students develop assistive technologies for disability support
Students from the Universidad de Sonora and Tecnológico de Monterrey have developed a mechatronic glove designed to translate Mexican Sign Language (LSM) into both voice and text. The device uses sensors to detect hand movements and convert that data into Spanish. The project, led by César Castillo, César Luna, and Mario Chaidez, won first place at the Smart City Hackathon 2026 and has been presented in Puerto Rico to gather feedback from the deaf community.
In Colombia, visually impaired students Camilo Esquea Gutiérrez and Santiago Gómez Zúñiga, graduates of the Universidad del Magdalena, have utilized technology and AI to create innovative educational tools. Their work focuses on overcoming barriers in higher education and developing research-based solutions to assist others with disabilities.
