Students face rising food costs and economic pressures
Students in different regions are facing varying economic challenges regarding food accessibility and costs. In Calgary, several local restaurants are offering specific discounts to help students manage their budgets. These include Bro’Kin Yolk Express, which offers a sandwich and fries combo for $10, and Native Tongues Taqueria, OEB Breakfast, Borough Bar and Grill, and Osmow’s Shawarma, all of which provide 10 per cent discounts with a valid student ID.
In Nigeria, the rising cost of living has led to increased food insecurity among students, with many forced to ration meals or attend classes hungry. While the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) provides a monthly upkeep stipend, there are concerns that inflation is eroding the purchasing power of these funds. Advocates suggest that long-term solutions require government policies to stabilize food prices and curb inflation to ensure students can afford basic necessities.
