Students in Chile and Argentina develop water quality monitoring tools

Students in Chile and Argentina have developed technological solutions to monitor water quality. In Ovalle, Chile, students from Colegio Raúl Silva Henríquez created “Aqualeptic,” a mobile application designed to address public uncertainty regarding water turbidity in the Limarí, Hurtado, and Grande river basins. The app uses scientific literacy and audiovisual tools to help citizens evaluate water parameters such as pH and hardness following heavy rainfall.

In Argentina, computer engineering students from the Universidad Nacional de La Matanza developed “Blue Surface.” This project features an autonomous hexacopter drone equipped with a buoy and five sensors to measure various water parameters in lagoons and reservoirs. While the developers noted the tool is intended to support rather than replace laboratory testing, the technology facilitates environmental decision-making through a dedicated data processing platform.
