Students navigate complex ethics and usage of artificial intelligence

Students are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence into their academic and personal lives, though attitudes toward its ethics and utility vary significantly. At Foothill Technology High School, an anonymous student reported using AI for mathematics to save time on tasks they already understand, despite the potential for academic dishonesty.

Research and personal accounts indicate a complex relationship with the technology. While some students express concerns regarding the environmental impact of AI or fear it will stifle creativity and critical thinking, many admit to using it for schoolwork or entertainment. A Pew Research Center survey noted that 57% of US teens have used chatbots for information searches and 54% have used them to assist with schoolwork.

The integration of AI in education remains a point of contention among educators, with some banning the tools to prevent cheating while others utilize them for tasks such as grading.
