Students navigate the emotional complexities of university independence

Students transitioning to higher education experience a complex mix of emotions regarding independence and family dynamics. For many, the start of university marks the first step toward living away from home, often hundreds of kilometers from their family residence.

Some students report a blend of anxiety and excitement as they prepare to manage their own schedules, grocery shopping, and social lives. While the prospect of freedom is a major draw, the sudden responsibility of living alone can be stressful for younger students.

Conversely, the end of the academic year can present challenges for those who have grown accustomed to autonomy. International students and those who have lived independently for months often face a sense of regression when returning to their parental homes, sometimes struggling with the transition back to family routines and domestic expectations.
