Studies report on transgender mental health and violence rates
A peer-reviewed study published in Acta Paediatrica, led by Professor Riittakerttu Kaltiala of Tampere University Hospital, has reported a significant increase in psychiatric morbidity among adolescents following medical gender reassignment in Finland. The study tracked 2,083 individuals under the age of 23 who accessed gender clinics between 1996 and 2019. Researchers found that psychiatric treatment rates rose more than sixfold among males and more than doubled in females following intervention. The authors noted that psychiatric needs do not subside after medical reassignment.
Separately, data regarding violence against transgender individuals shows a decline in certain metrics. According to Advocates for Trans Equality, the number of violent deaths fell from 53 in 2023 to 27 in 2025. The Human Rights Campaign also reported a peak of 47 deaths in 2021, falling to 27 in the most recent year. Additionally, FBI hate crime data indicated a decline in abuse against transgender people between 2024 and 2025.
