Studio Ghibli Chairman addresses AI-generated animation trends

Toshio Suzuki, Chairman and Producer of Studio Ghibli, has addressed the trend of AI-generated images mimicking the studio’s signature animation style. Suzuki stated that while AI can easily imitate specific visual aesthetics, it cannot replicate the artistic expression of Hayao Miyazaki.

Suzuki noted that the trend of users converting photos into Ghibli-style art, which saw significant usage following OpenAI updates, lacks meaning and interest. He emphasized that anyone with basic knowledge can distinguish these AI works as artificial.

The comments follow previous industry actions, such as the Content Overseas Distribution Association (CODA)—which includes Ghibli and Bandai Namco—requesting that OpenAI refrain from using member content for AI training without permission. Suzuki also referenced Miyazaki’s previous stance, where the director described AI-generated animation as an insult to life because the technology does not understand human suffering.
