Studio Ghibli’s My Neighbor Totoro highlights creative legacy

The Studio Ghibli classic ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ is scheduled for a broadcast on Japan’s Friday Roadshow. The film, which follows sisters Satsuki and Mei as they encounter forest spirits, remains a cultural staple nearly 40 years after its 1988 release.

Details regarding the film’s production highlight the collaboration between director Hayao Miyazaki and copywriter Shizuo Itoi. Itoi, who provided the voice for the father character Tatsuo, also authored the film’s famous catchphrase: ‘These creatures are still in Japan. Probably.’ Miyazaki reportedly requested the change from a version stating the creatures were ‘no longer’ in Japan to maintain a sense of wonder.

In China, where the film is known as ‘Long Mao,’ the movie has gained significant attention through unique visual interpretations. Designer Huang Hai created a highly acclaimed Chinese poster that depicts Satsuki and Mei walking across what appears to be a meadow, but is actually the belly of Totoro. This minimalist and bold design has received widespread praise for its creativity compared to the traditional Japanese poster featuring the iconic bus stop scene.
