Studio Ghibli’s My Neighbor Totoro production and cast details

Ahead of the upcoming television broadcast of the Studio Ghibli classic ‘My Neighbor Totoro’, details regarding the film’s production and cast have been highlighted.

Production insights reveal that the character Totoro’s late appearance in the film was a deliberate directorial choice. While initial concepts suggested Totoro appear at the beginning, producer Toshio Suzuki advised director Hayao Miyazaki to delay the character's introduction. Drawing a comparison to the film ‘E.T.’, Suzuki suggested that mysterious beings should appear in the middle of a story to build atmosphere. This decision helped establish the forest's mystical presence before the characters actually encounter the creature.

The film’s voice cast includes Noriko Hidaka as Satsuki, Chinatsu Sakamoto as Mei, and Hitoshi Itoi as the father. Sumi Shimamoto voices the mother, and Hitoshi Takagi provided the voice for Totoro.
