Study Finds Hourly 5‑Minute Walks Counter Sedentary Harm
A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine followed nearly 11,500 healthy adults with full‑time jobs for two weeks. Participants were assigned to take five‑minute walking breaks every 30, 60 or 120 minutes during waking hours. The researchers concluded that walking five minutes each hour provided the best balance of effectiveness and practicality for mitigating the negative effects of prolonged sitting.
Experts noted that such brief activity breaks can improve stability, coordination and flexibility, and also boost mood, energy, digestion, metabolism, cardiovascular function, respiration and musculoskeletal health. While the breaks are not a substitute for regular exercise, they offer a realistic strategy for people who spend long periods seated at work or home.
