Study Finds Men Often Take Poor Photos of Partners, Causing Frustration

A recent Instagram Husband study of more than 1,000 young French couples found that nine out of ten men admit photographing their partner creates frustration or tension, while 78% of women report disappointment with such pictures and 52% have openly criticized their partners. Sociologist Johanna Dagorn explained that men tend to pay less attention to photographic composition and approach the task with little enthusiasm.

The research is illustrated with an anecdote from Barcelona in autumn 2022, where Paola complained to her boyfriend after a poorly framed shot in front of the Sagrada Familia, saying, “You’re terrible, I should have brought a tripod.” The incident reflects a broader pattern of mismatched expectations in couples’ vacation photos, adding to other common travel stresses.

The study highlights gendered differences in who takes photos, with 60% of women saying they photograph their partner more often than men (32%). Researchers suggest the issue stems from differing levels of attention and consideration, echoing earlier work on parental presence behind the camera.
