Study Finds Three Female Orgasm Types as Pelvic Health Gains Attention

Research published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine validated three distinct patterns of female orgasm—named the wave, the volcano and the avalanche—based on pelvic‑floor muscle activity recorded by a bio‑feedback vibrator. The study involved 54 women who self‑stimulated with the device, which measured pressure, temperature, motion and transmitted data via Bluetooth. The patterns describe different rhythmic contractions of the pelvic floor during climax.

In Brazil, the July 31 Day of Orgasm highlighted broader discussions about women's sexual health. A survey by the Brazilian Society of Urology found that while 90% of women report sexual desire, only one‑third regularly reach orgasm, and many have faked it. Pelvic‑floor physiotherapist Berenice Shakti emphasized that strengthening the pelvic muscles can improve sexual function, noting that the clitoris and pelvic floor play central roles. The findings underscore growing interest in physiotherapy and research to address female orgasm difficulties.
