Study: Laschet’s 2021 laughter had no impact on election results

A study conducted by political scientists from the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and Goethe University Frankfurt has found no evidence that Armin Laschet’s controversial laughter during a 2021 flood disaster event significantly influenced voter behavior in the subsequent German federal election.

In July 2021, while visiting Erftstadt following catastrophic flooding, Laschet was observed laughing in the background during a speech by President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The incident drew intense criticism and has long been cited as a potential factor in his defeat in the Bundestag election, where Olaf Scholz of the SPD became Chancellor.

Researchers analyzed long-term survey data to determine the impact of inappropriate emotional reactions from political leaders. While the data indicated a personal image damage for Laschet, the study concluded there was no significant effect on how citizens ultimately voted.
