Study Links AI Use to Student Anxiety and Metacognitive Laziness
Researchers at the Education University of Hong Kong, the University of Hong Kong and Monash University in Australia developed a Metacognitive Laziness Scale to measure how students delegate self‑regulatory tasks to generative AI tools. Their findings indicate that reliance on AI for setting goals, monitoring comprehension and self‑evaluation may erode the metacognitive skills essential for deep learning.
A separate study led by the University of North Florida surveyed U.S. college students and identified a new form of performance anxiety called “noAIphobia,” describing stress when AI tools are unavailable. The research notes that 80‑90 % of students regularly use generative AI for essays, summaries and research, yet many campuses lack clear policies, leading to anxiety about academic integrity and stigma.
Both studies highlight the double‑edged nature of generative AI in higher education, underscoring the need for institutional guidelines to balance efficiency with the preservation of essential learning processes.
