Study links divorce and relationship breakdown to increased suicide risk in men
A large-scale meta-analysis involving over 100 million men across 30 countries has identified a significant link between the breakdown of intimate relationships and increased suicide risk in men. The research, which synthesized 75 studies published between 2000 and 2023, examined suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and completed suicides.
Findings indicate that men who are separated or divorced face higher risks compared to married men. Specifically, the odds of suicidal ideation were 1.64 times higher for separated or divorced men. For those who have divorced, the odds of suicide attempts were 1.73 times higher, while the odds of death by suicide were 2.82 times higher.
The study, involving researchers such as Michael Wilson from the University of Melbourne, suggests that the loss of a partner can lead to sudden social isolation and a sense of failure, particularly for men whose primary emotional support comes from their romantic partner. The research also highlights that the timing following the relationship breakdown is a critical factor in assessing risk.
