ChatGPT usage linked to cognitive decline and social isolation
A study published in the journal Applied Cognitive Psychology warns of the potential negative impacts of intensive ChatGPT use on cognitive and psychological abilities. The research, conducted by Zeineb Farhat of ISC Paris, focused on 45 young adults in France aged 18 to 25 who use the tool daily.
The study highlights the phenomenon of ‘cognitive offloading,’ where individuals rely on external tools to perform mental tasks rather than processing information independently. Participants reported a decline in critical thinking, reduced attention spans, and weakened memory. Some users also experienced ‘intellectual laziness’ and a decreased motivation to learn independently.
Psychologically, heavy reliance on the AI was linked to decreased self-confidence and increased anxiety when the tool was unavailable. Socially, the research noted a trend toward social isolation, as some users preferred interacting with the chatbot over engaging in direct discussions with friends, teachers, or colleagues.
