Study Links Late-Night Eating and Stress to Gut Health Problems
A recent study of more than 11,000 U.S. adults found that chronic stress combined with eating after 9 p.m. increases the likelihood of constipation or diarrhea by 1.7 times and reduces gut‑microbiome diversity, making participants 2.5 times more prone to intestinal disturbances. The research, presented at the 2026 Digestive Diseases Week conference, highlights the role of the gut‑brain axis in mediating these effects.
Nutrition experts also note that the timing and composition of meals influence hunger and digestive health. Breakfasts that pair protein with fiber—such as Greek yogurt with berries and seeds, whole‑grain toast with cheese or smoked salmon, or oatmeal with nuts and fruit—help stabilize blood‑sugar levels and prolong satiety for several hours, reducing mid‑morning cravings.
