Study Reconstructs 2008 Etna Magma Intrusion Dynamics

Researchers from Italy's Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (INGV) have published a detailed reconstruction of the May 13, 2008 magma intrusion on Mount Etna. By integrating surface geological observations with real‑time geophysical data, the team traced a lateral dike that began propagating northward from the volcano’s central conduit, generating a widespread surface fracture field and a sequence of earthquakes that marked its advance.

The intrusion halted before reaching the northern flank, then turned southward and sparked an eruption in the Valle del Bove. Depth estimates place the dike between 200 and 600 metres below the surface, and the cumulative seismic moment released matches the elastic energy expected for the modeled dike, indicating the system exhausted its propagation energy. The spontaneous arrest of the intrusion provided a rare opportunity to observe the behavior of a lateral magma intrusion in detail.
