Study Reveals Four Lifestyle Pillars for Active Longevity

A comprehensive review of 124 studies spanning five decades, published in Discover Public Health, identified four main factors that enable people to reach ages of 100 years or more with vitality. The research, led by scholars at the American University in Cairo, found that protective genetic variants, a plant‑based diet low in processed foods, regular natural movement, and strong emotional and social wellbeing together lower biological age and improve cellular repair mechanisms.

Separate research highlighted the role of lifelong hydration in slowing biological aging. An NIH‑backed study reported that chronic mild dehydration in older adults increases the risk of infections, kidney failure, falls, cognitive decline and hospitalisation. Maintaining optimal water intake can therefore support the same longevity pillars identified in the broader review.

These findings suggest that everyday habits, including diet, activity, social connections and adequate hydration, have a substantial impact on extending healthy lifespan.
