Sturgeon Moon 2026 to feature rare partial lunar eclipse

The Sturgeon Moon, a celestial event occurring in late August 2026, will feature a significant partial lunar eclipse. This phenomenon is expected to provide a rare visual spectacle, potentially turning the moon a reddish hue as Earth's shadow passes over it.

According to data from NASA and the Observatoire de Paris, the eclipse could involve up to 93% of the lunar disk being plunged into Earth's shadow. In the United States, specifically in Minnesota, peak illumination is expected on the night of Thursday, August 27. In Europe, the event will be visible during the night of August 27 into the early morning of August 28.

The name ‘Sturgeon Moon’ originates from Native American traditions associated with the Great Lakes region, marking the season when sturgeon are easily caught. The lunar cycle for August 2026 also includes a new moon on August 12 and a first quarter moon on August 20.
