Leipzig/Halle Airport security breach caused by vehicle crash

A security breach occurred at Leipzig/Halle Airport on the night of October 17, 2026, when a vehicle crashed through a perimeter fence. The incident prompted a large-scale police operation and the temporary closure of the airport's northern runway, forcing flight operations to move to the southern runway.

Following an initial search that found no intruders or suspicious objects, two men—aged 20 and 32—surrendered to authorities with legal counsel. Investigators determined the incident was likely an accident resulting from driving practice for a driver's license exam. The 20-year-old, who was reportedly driving without a valid license, admitted to crashing through the fence and fleeing the scene. The 32-year-old vehicle owner is also under investigation.

The breach occurred near the northern area where several Russian Antonov cargo aircraft are stationed due to EU sanctions. While the damage was approximately two kilometers from these planes, the incident has drawn comparisons to a previous security event in August involving an explosive-laden drone discovered near Ukrainian Antonov aircraft.
