Stuttgart leads in housing costs as school supply prices fluctuate

Recent economic data for Baden-Württemberg highlights divergent price trends for school supplies and high housing ancillary costs in Stuttgart.

According to the State Statistical Office, school supplies show mixed price developments. While notebooks and drawing pads increased in price by 8 percent compared to the previous year, other items became more affordable. Specifically, school bags and backpacks saw a price decrease of 1.3 percent, and writing instruments like pens and refills dropped by 1.1 percent.

In terms of housing, a study by the Bund der Steuerzahler reveals that Stuttgart has the highest state-related housing ancillary costs among Germany's 16 state capitals. A model three-person household in a single-family home in Stuttgart faces costs of 2,606 euros in 2026, significantly exceeding the national average of 2,019 euros. In contrast, Schwerin recorded the lowest costs at 1,615 euros.
