Stuttgart Opera renovation faces cost cuts as SPD backs touring alternative

The historic Stuttgart Opera House (Littmann Building) requires a major renovation to prevent structural decay and operational restrictions. The state and city have agreed to trim the project’s budget, targeting a maximum of €289 million for the overall overhaul and reducing the interim venue plan. Delays in approving the interim building have added about €2 million per quarter.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) in the Baden‑Württemberg Landtag, led by faction chief Sascha Binder, proposes dropping the costly interim venue entirely. Instead, the opera and ballet would embark on a statewide tour, performing in regional theatres to cut expenses, attract new audiences and provide artistic exchange.

Both proposals aim to preserve the opera’s cultural heritage while addressing the region’s strained finances.
