Stuttgart Opera renovation sparks political debate over costs

Political debate is intensifying in Baden-Württemberg regarding the planned renovation of the Stuttgart State Theatre. Tobias Vogt, the CDU parliamentary group leader, has raised significant concerns over the project's escalating costs, which are estimated to reach billions of euros.

Vogt argues that the government cannot justify such massive spending during an economic crisis, particularly as local municipalities face chronic budget deficits and the potential closure of hospitals. The project involves the complex structural renovation of the 110-year-old Littmann-Bau, a process engineers warn carries unpredictable financial and technical risks.

To accommodate ballet and opera performances during the decades-long construction period, officials have proposed an interim venue. While recent efforts aimed to reduce the cost of this temporary facility to approximately €289 million, the overall scale of the project remains a point of contention. The final vote on the revised interim proposal has been postponed due to the ongoing political unrest.
