Berngau shooting: Two officials killed during routine weapon inspection

A 60-year-old hunter and sports shooter killed two employees of the Neumarkt district office during a routine, unannounced weapon inspection in Berngau, Bavaria. The victims, a 45-year-old male and a 54-year-old female, were shot on Thursday afternoon while checking the man's compliance with weapon storage regulations.

The suspect barricaded himself inside his residence for several hours following the shooting. After failed attempts by specialized police units to negotiate a peaceful surrender, a tactical operation was launched around 2:20 a.m. on Friday. Using explosives and gunfire, special forces stormed the building and apprehended the man, who sustained a minor leg injury during the arrest.

Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann stated that the suspect, who legally owned ten firearms, had no known history of extremist ideology and was not previously known to police intelligence services. The motive for the attack remains unclear, and authorities are investigating whether there was any prior connection between the suspect and the district office.
