Styria hosts mobility week as Munich study proposes wealth tax

In Styria, Austria, the European Mobility Week 2026 focused on sustainable transportation for all generations. The event involved over 200 municipalities, educational institutions, and organizations. Highlights included public transit trips through the South Styria region and interactive workshops designed to help seniors maintain independent mobility using regional bus and rail services.

In Munich, Germany, a study commissioned by Greenpeace and conducted by the Forum Ökologisch-Soziale Marktwirtschaft (FÖS) suggests that an ecological wealth tax on assets exceeding 100 million euros could generate approximately 240 million euros annually for the city. This revenue could cover roughly 40 percent of Munich's planned annual deficit for 2026.

The study arrives as Munich faces significant budget pressures, with planned savings of 253 million euros in 2026 and 388 million euros in 2027. Current financial constraints have already led to delays in school construction projects and planned budget cuts for local public transit, including service reductions for the U7 line and certain bus routes.
