Styria installs 912 white crosses to mark fatal accident sites
The Styrian road maintenance service has installed 912 white crosses along roads and at railway crossings in Styria, Austria, to mark locations where fatal traffic accidents have occurred. The initiative aims to increase awareness regarding road safety and the dangers of distraction, inattention, and improper speed.
Statistics from 2006 to 2025 indicate that 1,568 people lost their lives in 1,468 traffic accidents in the region. This includes 860 deaths resulting from 799 accidents on state roads outside urban areas, as well as 57 deaths at railway crossings. The number of crosses differs from the total death toll because some locations were unsuitable for installation due to structural changes, and some crosses represent accident sites rather than individual victims.
While fatalities on state roads have decreased by approximately 36 percent since 2006, road users remain at risk. Among those killed on state roads, 51 percent were car occupants and 27 percent were motorcyclists.
