Styria music schools face funding freeze and budget cuts

Music schools in Styria, Austria, are facing significant financial uncertainty following a funding freeze and proposed budget cuts. Approximately 300,000 euros in compensatory payments for the Bärnbach, Köflach, and Voitsberg music schools have been withheld for the current school year due to a decision by State Councilor Stefan Hermann.

In response, a broad alliance including mayors, opposition politicians, and music associations has issued an open letter to the state government. The group is demanding the reversal of planned budget cuts totaling 3.3 million euros. They warn that these reductions could lead to lesson cancellations, longer waiting lists, and increased fees for parents, as municipalities may be unable to cover the deficits alone.

Protesters and music school directors have called for a round table to develop a sustainable, long-term concept and a new Styrian Music School Act to ensure future planning security for both schools and supporting municipalities. A petition related to the issue has already gathered approximately 12,000 signatures.
