Styria ranks lowest in Austria for childcare coverage
A new analysis by the Momentum Institute reveals that Styria ranks lowest in Austria regarding childcare and early childhood education rates. The report highlights significant gaps in coverage for both under-three and three-to-five-year-old age groups.
For children under three, Styria has a childcare rate of only 24 percent, while the rate for children aged three to five stands at 89 percent. Both figures place the region at the bottom of the national comparison. The analysis also notes that childcare availability often fails to support full-time employment for parents due to insufficient opening hours and a lack of available spots.
In Styria, only about one-third of childcare places for children under three are compatible with full-time work. The KPÖ party has criticized the regional government, stating that recent legislative amendments have failed to provide tangible improvements for staff, parents, or children, and that the current situation exacerbates social inequality and limits developmental opportunities for children.
