Styria state budget faces backlash over austerity and debt
The new state budget for Styria has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties following its presentation by the FPÖ and ÖVP-led government. Max Lercher, chairman of the Styrian SPÖ, described the budget as an uncoordinated austerity package lacking substance and a clear plan. He noted that the government has missed the stability pact by 79 million euros while simultaneously projecting a debt increase of 2.4 billion euros through 2027.
Opposition members, including the KPÖ, have criticized the budget for targeting social services, healthcare, youth programs, and public sector personnel. Protesters gathered at the Landhaus to demonstrate against the cuts, which they argue disproportionately affect citizens struggling with inflation while exempting large corporations from contributing to fiscal stabilization. Alexander Melinz of the KPÖ stated that the government is prioritizing wealthy interests over the social state and public health services.
