Styria tutoring costs rise to 18.1 million euros

Total spending on private tutoring in Styria rose to 18.1 million euros during the last school year, up from 16.6 million euros the previous year, according to a study by the Chamber of Labour (Arbeiterkammer).

While the average cost per student decreased slightly to 770 euros from 780 euros, the overall expenditure increased because many families are shifting from continuous tutoring to more expensive, sporadic support sessions held specifically before exams or tests.

The study, conducted by the IFES institute, found that approximately 34 percent of students in Styria—about 46,000 children—either required or would have benefited from tutoring. About 17 percent of students actually received paid support. Notably, around 7,000 children who needed assistance were unable to access it due to financial constraints. Mathematics remains the most requested subject, accounting for 66 percent of tutoring needs.
