Styrian Governor Mario Kunasek faces criticism amid rising FPÖ poll numbers

Human rights organization SOS Mitmensch has accused Styrian Governor Mario Kunasek of spreading disinformation regarding Austrian citizenship requirements. The organization refuted claims made by Kunasek on an FPÖ media channel, which suggested that citizenship is granted automatically to asylum seekers and that only a few months of employment are needed to meet income requirements.

SOS Mitmensch clarified that Austrian citizenship laws involve significant hurdles, including B1-level German proficiency and strict income proofs. Specifically, applicants must demonstrate income for at least three years within a six-year period and cannot have received social assistance during that time.

Simultaneously, new polling data from IFDD indicates a significant surge in support for the FPÖ in Styria. If regional elections were held now, the party would reach approximately 43 percent, up from 34.8 percent in November 2024. The survey shows the ÖVP and SPÖ both declining to 19 percent, while the Greens and KPÖ show slight increases.
