Styrian municipalities face financial pressure amid rising costs
Municipalities in Styria are facing significant financial pressure due to rising expenditures in social and nursing care, childcare, and infrastructure. A study by the Center for Administrative Research (KDZ) highlights that increasing costs are being met by declining revenues, forcing local governments to postpone or cancel essential projects.
In response, the SPÖ is calling for structural changes to municipal financing. Key demands include a temporary suspension of the state levy to provide immediate financial relief. Additionally, the party proposes adjusting the cost-sharing ratio for social and nursing care from the current 60:40 split to 70:30 in favor of the municipalities.
Local leaders Mario Abl and Stefan Hofer emphasize the need for greater planning security and clear responsibilities between federal, state, and local governments. They argue that new tasks should not be assigned to municipalities without corresponding funding to ensure they remain capable of action.
